When the international transfer ban was lifted in 1983, a flood of short term signings came into the English game from Australia, and such as Wally Lewis and Peter Sterling graced the English game. Featherstone Rovers signed Alan McMahon, a tough and robust player, who toured with 1978 Kangaroos, and also represented Australia in two world cup competitions in 1975 and 1977.  In all he played a total of 148 games first-grade games, most notably for Balmain, but also with Newtown and Canberra.  In 1983, he signed for Rovers during the NRL off season.  With his international background expectations were high, but he struggled in a side which was also not playing well due to injuries and loss of form.  After only 9 games his Featherstone career was over and he returned to Canberra.

His involvement with rugby league continued after his playing days.  He played a key role in laying the foundations for the success of the Newcastle Knights after he became the club’s first coach during the preparation for their entry to the expanded NRL in 1988.  He led the Knights in their first three seasons.  Sadly he died suddenly in 2003 at the age of 48 and was described by the then Newcastle chairman as “the single most influential person in the history of the club”.
