Andy Mackintosh was a highly rated young stand-off at Leeds and was their Colts player of the year in 1979/80.  He also gained representative honours with the GB Colts team.  Indeed, the Headingley club pursued an interest in him at the expense of another promising Leeds based junior, Ellery Hanley. Sadly, Mackintosh’s career never took off as a series of major knee injuries severely hampered his progress.

He came to Featherstone initially on loan in 1985, before signing on. His undoubted talent was obvious, but he continued to struggle with injuries, rarely managing a decent run of games. In April 1985 Bradford’s Ellery Hanley came to Featherstone in search of the tries he needed to become the first player in decades to manage 50 in one year. The TV cameras were there to record it, but the game turned into a masterclass from Mackintosh and Hanley went home empty-handed. When his knee gave way again after just three matches into a comeback after a year out, he decided to retire.
