Hull-born half-back Anthony Thackeray had long been a thorn in Featherstone’s side before he finally became a Rovers player. He was widely recognised as one of the stand-out players at Championship level for over a decade. Having started at Hull, he then joined Castleford and actually made his Featherstone debut in 2008 on a brief six match loan spell from the Tigers. His seven tries in those six games gave Featherstone fans an early idea of his prowess.

Spells at Widnes, Halifax and Dewsbury were all productive and prolific in terms of try scoring, before he re-joined Featherstone in 2016 under coach Jon Sharp to partner Kyle Briggs in the halves. A successful campaign saw Rovers make the Qualifying Eights playoffs, and Thackeray made his contribution. In 2017 Matty Wildie played more at scrum-half allowing Thackeray to operate from stand-off, but playing his usual role, distributing, backing up breaks and a good tactical kicking game. When Jon Duffy went for Martin Ridyard and Tom Holmes at half-back for 2018, Thackeray found himself filling in at full-back and at centre. However, injuries to both starters saw Rovers finish that season with Thackeray and Wildie in the halves. It was his best season in terms of tries, 18 in 23 matches.

The following year Thackeray left for Sheffield where he won Man of the Match at Wembley in the 1895 Cup final. A career total of over 350 games and more than 200 tries is testimony to his impact on the sport at Championship level.
