A rugby union convert who had played for his country at the 1987 RUWC as a stand-off, Asa Amone became Featherstone Rovers' first Tongan player when he joined in 1998. He had previously played for Halifax and made his name as a bustling outside back with pace and strength. At Featherstone he was mainly used as a forward, finishing his career at prop. He played for Rovers in the 1998 Grand final and it was his imperceptible knock-on in a strong tackle which led to Rovers' match-winning try being disallowed.
