It was quite a coup for fledgling senior side Featherstone Rovers to capture a player of the stature (literal and metaphorical) of Ben Gronow in 1929. From Bridgend, he was a Welsh international rugby union forward who kicked off the first international match ever played at Twickenham, Gronow ‘went north’ in 1910 and signed for Huddersfield. He had a hugely successful career there as an integral part of the “Team of All Talents” as Fartown were known. A prodigious goal-kicker, he won everything there was to win in rugby league, winning caps for Wales and Great Britain. At the age of 41, he arrived at Featherstone, was made club captain, and was used sparingly to help develop what was still a young and inexperienced squad of players. In later life he coached Morley RUFC.
