Like many youngsters in the modern game Ben Hellewell was signed up by a Super League Academy, in his case Warrington, before moving back to Championship level without ever receiving a top flight chance. After loan spells at York and Barrow he arrived at Featherstone in 2013, still only 21, and facing competition for a first team place from such as Greg Worthington, Tommy Saxton and Will Sharp. An intelligent player who preferred centre to wing, Hellewell developed his game and bulked up. But unhappy with his lack of game time, went out on loan and then moved to London where he spent five successful seasons, finally making his Super League bow in 2019 with the Broncos. At Leigh he developed into a second-row forward, and he moved back to Featherstone for a second spell in 2022. He was a dependable and hard-working presenece both at centre and in the second-row, contributing a useful quantity of tries. At the end of the season he joined Salford, where he had had a brief loan spell during 2022.

A Scottish international, he represented his country whilst a Featherstone player at the 2013 World Cup, and again at the 2022 event, winning a total of 22 caps in his international career.
