Featherstone born Bill Leake signed for his home town team, and played a dozen games showing some promise before Huddersfield persuaded him to sign for them in 1943.  Rovers probably didn’t have enough time in those three months to work out just what they were missing. Leake won a Challenge Cup winners medal when Huddersfield beat Bradford in the two legged 1945 finals and won another with Bradford when they beat Halifax in the 1949 final.  Described as a safe fielder and a sound defender, he had a long and distinguished career at the top. Featherstone Rovers could only regret that they had “let one slip away” so quickly.
