A product of the Halifax area amateur rugby league scene, Bill Shreeve began his career at Warrington in 1949 but quickly moved on to Bradford Northern. He was a regular in the side when Bradford set a club record of 18 successive victories in the 1951/52 season and lost in the Championship final. He moved to Rovers in 1953 with the 16 stone prop fulfilling a need for weight and leadership in the pack at the time.   He made 69 appearances before prematurely retiring in 1955. However, he later had a change of mind and joined Keighley in November 1957, for a fee of £250, where he played until 1960.
