Billy Barker was Rovers tenth new signing in the 1937/38 season as new chairman Abe Bullock sought to strengthen the team.  Born in Moor Road, he moved to Featherstone Square and started work down the pit at Ackton Hall colliery. He was 20 years old when he signed for Rovers as an amateur trialist from the Purston Intermediate club in January 1938. Purston were unbeaten in the Wakefield League at the time, and Barker was a regular try scorer for them. He made his Featherstone debut on New Year’s Day in a derby match with Wakefield Trinity. He showed up well, although he had to leave the field before the end when his ear was torn. With straight running and notably solid tackling, he did enough to be signed on and played 21 games over two seasons until World War Two broke out. Billy Barker was on active service for the duration of the war and didn’t play professional rugby again. He left Ackton Hall and moved and ending up at Roundwood Colliery at Ossett, before leaving the pits and working at Humphrey Carpets, Birstall. He moved to Batley and spent the rest of his life there.
