Billy Williams was a strong second row forward in the Rovers team whose exploits in junior football between 1919 and 1921 led to the club’s elevation to the professional ranks. He played a couple of games in that first senior season but then decided to concentrate on his role as trainer to the team. In those days, the trainer was effectively coach of the team, a role Billy performed up to the Second World War. He was also a masseur and qualified physiotherapist with his own private practice, and a superb athlete excelling at many sports, including boxing. He concentrated on the fitness and preparation of the players, and the technical elements of the rugby were a matter for the senior players in the team.
This arrangement continued until 1944 when Aubrey Casewell was appointed as first team coach at Featherstone Rovers, leaving Billy to concentrate on keeping the players fit until he officially retired in 1962. In the interim, his son Jim had taken up the same profession of physiotherapy, and from the 1950s, had begun to assist his father with the players. Thus, it was natural that Jim should succeed Billy officially at the club. Unofficially it was the turn of Williams Sr. to be his son’s assistant as he found it hard to keep away from Post Office Road.
Billy was still assisting in 1978 when he finally decided to call it a day after a 65 year association with the club.
