Bob Rycroft was one of a number of youngsters given a chance in a pre-season friendly at Featherstone between the Whites (first team) and the Reds (second team) and he showed up well enough to be signed. He had previously been playing rugby union. Within weeks of his signing World War Two started. It’s impossible to say how Rycroft’s career would have developed without the war interruption, but his six seasons at Featherstone included just eleven first team games in the War Emergency League. His final game was on New Year’s Day 1946.
