At the end of a long, hard, unsuccessful season, a much changed Featherstone line up closed 1938/9 with a defeat at St. Helens. A couple of local newcomers were tried out. Charles Windmill was an 18 year old forward playing locally who was thrown into the first team to see what he could do. At the start of the following season, war broke out and Windmill got no second chance.
