In January 1989 Rovers sold star loose-forward Paul Lyman to Hull KR and received experienced second-rower Chris Burton as part of the deal. What a good piece of business that turned out to be. Burton was a former Great Britain international with a reputation as a no-nonsense enforcer who was well-known to referees and the disciplinary committee. As tough and uncompromising as he was on the field, he was the perfect gentleman off it. Having started at Leeds, he made his name at Hull KR; playing in the 1981 Cup final a Wembley, winning two Championship medals and nine GB caps. For Rovers, he was the model professional, running and tackling all day and setting an example to younger forwards, despite the occasional sending-off. After five good seasons with Rovers, he retired.
