Sharlston scrum-half Colin Chapman made five first team appearances in the 1936/37 season when both Ray Hamer and Allen Ward were unavailable. He was described as “an unnamed youth from the district” on his debut, but “the mystery scrum-half gave an excellent display”. After an unhappy display in his third match away to Streatham in London, he was dropped, but recalled a couple of months later for a trip to Hull KR. Now named, after having been signed, his encouraging performance was disrupted by having to move out to the wing to cover injuries. His next match, a bad home defeat against Batley was his last.
