Sharlston born Colin Smith signed for Featherstone as a youngster as an out-and-out ball-playing loose forward. When new head coach Peter Fox switched Vince Farrar from loose forward to hooker, Colin Smith was drafted in to show his ability at first team level. What competition he faced for a place. A young Terry Hudson also had eyes on that position. As did Alan Rhodes. The following year was no easier as the introduction of Keith Bridges saw Farrar move back to loose forward before settling at prop. Then Rovers signed Charlie Stone, and Smith once again found himself back in the A team. Thus, this talented forward managed 44 games in 4 seasons.
