Cyril Gilbertson was a talented half-back from Dewsbury, equally at home at scrum-half and stand-off. With his hometown team he had played in the 1947 Championship final against Wigan at Maine Road Manchester, although Dewsbury lost 13-4. The following February Gilbertson signed for Featherstone and went straight into his first team debut. He struck up a useful partnership with Jimmy Russell which served Rovers well over the following two seasons. When he lost his first team place definitively, he moved back to Dewsbury in September 1952.
