Cyril Hammond was a feature in Rovers three-quarters through a difficult period in the club’s history. Born in Kinsley nr Hemsworth, he played junior football locally, and signed for Rovers as a 20 year old in October 1933 and went straight into the team. Equally at home on the wing, or more often at centre, he was a consistent performer at a time when the first team squad changed on a monthly basis as players were brought into the side and then sold. Hammond’s four season stretch covering more than 100 games ended when he was traded to Keighley in exchange for second-row forward Ambrose Askin.
