York full-back Cyril Knowles was born at Fitzwilliam and filled in at the back for Featherstone Rovers in a war-time fixture. On Easter Monday he played full-back for York v Featherstone at Post Office Road. The very next day he travelled to Huddersfield with Rovers for his special guest appearance.

Knowles had two sons, both famous soccer players Cyril Knowles was a popular left back for Tottenham Hotspur, whose fans had a top 40 hit with “Nice one, Cyril!” in 1973. The song was aptly appropriated for our own Cyril, Cyril Kellett who kicked eight goals from eight attempts at Wembley in 1973. His brother Peter Knowles was an accomplished player for Wolves before renouncing  sport to become a Jehovah’s Witness. Peter, like his brother, also had a song written about him, “God’s footballer” by Billy Bragg.
