Few players can have had such a varied career at Feathertsone as Cyril Pawson’s eight seasons through the 1940s. He made his debut as a full-back, noted for his good kicking. Within weeks of his debut he was filling in at stand-off for the injured Hamer, and was also tried at centre. Perhaps this versatility counted against him, as once Walt Parkin at full-back and Hamer at stand-off were fit again, there was no place for Pawson, who had to be content with reserve team rugby until the end of the war. At this stage he was switched to the pack. However, this was not the typical backs-to-forwards move to loose forward for example. Pawson was thrown straight into the engine room as blind side prop! He thrived there, still used his useful kicking game as well as developing his scrummaging skills, and occasionally filling in at full-back in the odd match. In his final season with the first team he actually started 13 games at prop, and 5 at full-back, a most unusual combination of positions. His kicking that year brought him 27 goals, second only to Tommy Townsend in the goal-scoring charts.
