When star stand-off Dick Allman suffered a serious shoulder injury in December 1945 various players were tried in the stand off position before Rovers went into the transfer market and signed Dave Bennett for £300, from Bradford Northern, in January 1946. He and Tommy Crabtree made their debuts in the win against Hull KR on 26 January 1946 which ended a nine game losing run.  He kept the stand-off berth at start of the following season when Allman retumed and was moved into the centres.  But with the team struggling Allman was moved back to the stand-off position and Bennett was transfer listed for £250.  He moved to Bramley in January 1947.
