Dave Downs grew up in Featherstone, and he started playing with Featherstone's junior teams before and having spells with both Castleford and Wakefield Colts. The returned to his home town club, but despite some stand-out performances for the A-team he received just one first team outing off the bench in Rovers' relegation season of 1978/79. After a spell out of the game, he joined his brother Craig in playing for the A team in 1984/85 and made one further first team appearance when the club was short-handed at Widnes in September 1984.
A fitness fanatic in his playing days, later, he turned to fitness training and coaching. He was a pioneer of wrestling techniques which helped defensive tactics in the professional era, and enjoyed great success in this role at a number of clubs.
