Featherstone-based Dave Sykes was playing on the local amateur scene when Peter Fox drafted him into the first team squad as Rovers pushed for promotion in 1988. He took over from Neil Woolford on the wing. For the Premiership final at Old Trafford, with Chris Bibb injured, Steve Quinn switched to full-back and Dave Sykes filled in ably at centre. The following season he was limited to a couple of substitute appearances and A team rugby.
