Derek Carr was signed from Allerton Bywater in the close season of 1958 having represented England versus France at junior level.  He could play any position in the pack and made his senior debut in the second row against Dewsbury on 4 April 1959, setting up a try for Cyril Woolford, which enabled the winger to break the club try scoring record then held by Eric Batten.  Despite that impressive debut, Derek's Rovers career did not really flourish and he was transferred to Bradford Northern after trials in September 1963 for £500, having made eight appearances.
