At the beginning of the 1953/4 season an inexperienced Featherstone pack needed a boost and Featherstone picked up two veteran campaigners, Bill Shreeve from Bradford and Derek Howes from Wakefield. A heavyweight second-rower, Howes was from Pontardawe and played for Llanelli before switching codes and signing for Wakefield Trinity. He capped his first season with a Challenge Cup final appearance.  Considering he was approaching 40 years old, he did a steady no-frills job for Featherstone that season before retiring.
