After pre-season trials, local centre Derek Smith slotted seamlessly into the Featherstone first team three-quarter line as official rugby league resumed after the end of World War Two. 35 games that year brought him a modest seven tries in a young Rovers team that struggled in the bottom half of the table. None of his subsequent seasons were quite as successful for Smith and he moved to Wakefield in a straight swap for Ken Brookes in January 1949.
