E. Jones was one of four Glasshoughton Colliery players all signed by Featherstone Rovers for trials in late 1941. Jones’ erstwhile team-mates Dick Allman, Larry Hossack and Jack Lane all went on to have varying degrees of success with the club. Jones himself made an imperceptible debut when a scratch St.Helens team turned up for a war-time fixture at Featherstone in November 1941 short of players, and had to borrow Nelson Tennant to make up the numbers. Towards the end of the following season, 1942/43, he played three more games in the second-row.

This player is not to be confused with Ernest Jones, a reserve team winger from Purston who signed for Featherstone Rovers from Green Lane WMC in 1939. He never played first team rugby before being called up to fight in World War Two in 1940. He was captured at Dunkirk and spent most of the war in POW camps.
