Ernie Ramskill was a local forward who made his first team debut in the second-row, filling in for injured club skipper Bill Sherwood. He did well enough to keep his place for the next couple of matches, even when Sherwood had recovered. At that point, Ramskill’s rugby career was put on hold as he was on active service for the rest of World War Two. A full six years later he re-appeared in the Rovers team as open-side prop and played sporadically over the next three seasons.
