Originally signed from Fitzwilliam in December 1947, Edward Mackrell was a young 22 year old reserve forward at Featherstone Rovers when he got his first team call up to play Hull before Christmas in 1948. Within a year, and understandably frustrated by a lack of first team opportunities, he put in a transfer request and did not appear for the first team again.
