In April 1928, as Rovers were pressing for a top four finish first choice scrum half Charlie Annable was injured, and with his back up Jim Rudd also injured, Rovers looked around for a suitable replacement.  Ed Martin was given an opportunity in a game against York on 7^th April 1928.  Signed from Wakefield Balme Lane Club the 20 year old had never played outside junior football.  His performance against York was outstanding in both attack and defence, Rovers had their replacement.   

Unfortunately at the start of next season Ed suffered an injury in a pre-season game and with Charlie Annable now fully fit and playing well, Ed’s first team appearances were very limited over the next couple of seasons.  In 1930, he moved to Bramley in search of more first team opportunities.
