Born in Featherstone and living locally Ernest Alder signed as a promising 17 year old with Halifax.  He played sporadically for Halifax without ever  nailing down a regular place in the first team in the run up to World War 1.  After the war he went on to play for Dewsbury and York.  His debut for York in October 1920 noted his prominence in the passing movements made by York, and also his goal kicking, in a victory over Wakefield Trinity.

After some time out of the game,   he appeared in September 1923 to play full back for Rovers after injuries deprived them of the services of regular full back Sid Denton and back up Bill Seymour.  It wasn't a great success with press reports describing him as "trying hard but too slow" and he was not called upon again.
