Signed from Purston White Horse in 1930, it was immediately apparent there was a touch of class about youngster Ernie Winter. Occasional injuries aside, he was a first team regular at centre for the next three years. In 1931/2 he finished the club’s second top try-scorer with ten, but it was his own wingman George Barker who finished top with 11. He was selected to play for Yorkshire in the 1932/3 County Championship, Featherstone’s eighth county cap in just 11 top flight seasons. If bigger clubs had been previously unaware of his talent, they no longer were, and months after his county debut, he was sold.

Ernie Winter left for Hunslet in January 1933 where he had a long and successful career, although he did come back to Featherstone briefly as war-time guest player in 1939. After retiring for playing, he served on the club committee during the 1950s.
