Ernie Wright made an unheralded Featherstone debut in the Emergency War League in 1944, but there was no doubt that Rovers had discovered a high quality forward. Frequently praised as outstanding for his running and his work-rate, Wright was also a good kicker, in open play and at goal. 1945/6 was his best season, he was the club’s leading goal and points scorer and was selected for Yorkshire in the County Championship. It was with great regret to the club that he decided to join the police force in October 1946, as that meant he could no longer play professional rugby.
