Kippax-born Frank Wagstaff first played professionally for Hunslet before joining Castleford. As a miner he was not called on for military service in World War Two and so guested for various clubs during the war. Once the war was over, Wagstaff signed for Featherstone Rovers in July 1945. Although he started as a second-row he matured into an open-side prop and understood his scrummaging responsibilities well. He rarely missed a game for Rovers, but after little over a year he moved on to Rochdale for a fee of £200, then played for Huddersfield, before finishing his career at Batley.
