Signed from Glasshoughton Colliery in November 1962, Frank Ward served his apprenticeship in the reserves before his big chance came at Halifax, with regular Vaughan Thomas out injured. Rovers lost and Thomas returned, but Frank Ward was recalled at the end of the season for the Championship playoffs. He played his part in a notable win at Wigan in the first round, and went back to Halifax for his third game, a heavy defeat. His Rovers career of three matches, including two at Thrum Hall, was over.
