Fred Gill started his career with Rovers in the their first season as a senior club, joining his brother Austin who was already at the club.  He had the reputation of being a speedy runner, having won several sprint races on the track.  Fred played for three seasons in a range of back positions without ever nailing a regular first team slot in one position but his versatility proved a useful asset to the team. He transferred to Halifax in 1924 and also went on to play for Bramley.
