Brothers Fred and Les Wilford were signed together from Featherstone Rugby Union in August 1929. After shining in pre-season friendlies, and noting how quickly he had adapted from union to league, Fred Wilford made his debut against Wakefield on the opening day. He gave a nervous display, “giving too many loose passes”. Retained for the following week, he was moved out to the wing, but was then dropped for the next game. His comeback coincided with his brother’s debut and they appeared together on the 15^th of February 1930 in a heavy defeat at Barrow.  Three seasons later he played a further two matches on the wing during an injury crisis.
