Gareth Hock was a Wigan born forward, with the size, pace and skills that enabled him to win Super League’s Young Player of the Year, appear in a Grand final and win representative honours in his first full season.  A complete knee reconstruction hampered his early career, but he came back to win Great Britain honours and played for England at the 2008 World Cup. A two year ban for drug use in 2009 was the first of a number of off-field incidents that dogged his later career. He developed from a rangy, ball-handling back-rower into an enforcer-style prop forward, the kind of pantomime villain opposition supporters loved to hate.

It was with this reputation that Featherstone Rovers became one more in a long line of Hock’s clubs when he arrived in 2018. What he offered was a good value, honest contribution, largely free of the ill-discipline for which he was known. His open personality endeared him to fans in an unlikely fashion and it was with regret that Rovers released him from his contract having failed to reach the Qualifying Eights in July 2018.
