Gary Price signed for Wakefield Trinity as one of the hottest properties in the junior game in 1988. Despite winning a Great Britain cap in 1991, his career had stalled a little by the time he came to Featherstone in the summer of 1993. Rovers coach Steve Martin had received an offer from Castleford for Ian Smales, and was only prepared to sell if Rovers could buy Price. Both transfers duly went through. Rovers got an intelligent running second-rower, and 14 tries in his two year spell was testimony to his eye for the gap. Confusingly, Rovers already had a second-rower at that time called Gary Price, signed from Leeds. Thus Gary became Gary “H” throughout his career.

After Rovers were demoted in 1995 when Super League was formed, Price emigrated to Australia and played for South Sydney. When he came back to Featherstone in 1997, he had bulked up into a prop forward. As pack leader, he played a vital role in Rovers’ run to the 1998 Grand final. After that shattering loss, he left Featherstone for the second time and closed the circle on his playing days by going back to Wakefield and had three more seasons at Belle Vue.
