A product of Yew Tree ARLFC, second-rower Gary Rose turned professional for Keighley. Two good years there brought him to Rovers’ attention and Peter Fox made Rose his second signing from Keighley in a matter of months, following Terry Manning. For £20,000, what a player Featherstone Rovers got. Short and barrel-chested with a great engine and a never-say-die spirit, Rose was the typical 100%er who couldn’t fail to endear himself to the fans with his efforts. A tireless tackler who ran the ball in, he stood on the front line and accepted no intimidation from anyone. As much as the crowd loved this style, it was somewhat overlooked that Rose was also a decent ball-handler too.

In the 1990/91 season Rose really established himself as a top-flight footballer, and he was in his element in a pack that contained Jeff Grayshon, Brendon Tuuta, Andy Fisher and Chris Burton. He stayed with Rovers through relegation in 1992 and played his part in Rovers Second Division Championship season the following year, although he missed the playoffs and the Old Trafford final. It was disappointing that he did not figure in coach Steve Martin’s plans for the following season and he left for Leeds. He then had two years at Hull before finishing his career with Dewsbury, a 13 year stretch of over 250 matches, the best of which were played in a Featherstone shirt.
