Alongside Bob Noon, Gary Tingle was one of a number of good young hookers who could not break into the Featherstone first team because of the tremendous form of international Keith Bridges. When Bridges was sold to Bradford in August 1978, Tingle was the first option coach Terry Clawson turned to. Rovers then moved to sign Ray Handscombe and Tingle was back on reserve team duty. He played a couple of games covering for Handscombe’s injury when Rovers were in the Second Division in 1979, but then a new crop of hookers including Neil Gray and John O’Neill came through and Tingle signed for Batley.
