When Rovers played Hunslet on a quagmire of a pitch in January 1947, all eyes were on returning hero Walt Tennant, recently re-signed from Wakefield. He played at centre, but outside him a young reserve team winger George Mahon was on debut, filling in for the injured Dick Allman on the wing. Despite the conditions, it was noted in the press that “Mahon ……. not only tackled well, but showed the overall enthusiasm which should win him another trial with the senior team”. It did, but the following week against St.Helens was less impressive as he unaccountably dropped the ball in full flight for the try line. Omitted from the team for the following week his senior career was over.
