George Penketh arrived from Bradford Northern soon after the start of the 1963/64 season, with Dennis Morgan and Derek Carr offered to Northern in exchange. New coach Johnny Malpass was keen to introduce him into side immediately and he played 30 games that year at left centre.  Within a fortnight of his debut he was lining up against Australia in a famous Featherstone victory. After a successful first year, things were harder for Penketh as the emergence of Vaughan Thomas and Keith Cotton, as well as the form of evergreen Ken Greatorex left no spot for Penketh. He managed just 16 further games in the following two seasons.
