Sharlston born prop George Westwood was playing A team rugby for Featherstone Rovers when the side was abandoned for cost-cutting reasons. Westwood was trialled in the first team, but in only his third game suffered a serious injury. He walked off the field at the end of a match against Bradford, but complained of a headache. Taken to Pontefract hospital, he was found to have a depressed skull fracture. Within eight weeks he was back in the first team front row. He played a further seven matches before going back to amateur rugby.
