Harry began his rugby career with Rossington and was spotted by Rovers when they held a public trial match. He was the only player signed after that game. As a tearaway type forward he made a most impressive senior debut in the second-row on 17 September 1963 when he scored two tries in a surprise 22-12 victory over Leeds in the second round of the Yorkshire Cup. His promise was maintained, appearing in the Yorkshire Cup final against Halifax in only his seventh senior game, and in 13 appearances that season he scored four tries. Unfortunately, he then sufferred a serious knee injury at Wigan on 25 January 1964 which seriously disrupted his career. In the next two seasons he made only limited appearances. This highly promising player made only 23 appearances when he was sold to Doncaster in October 1966 for £300.
