After making his debut at centre as a teenager during the war years, Herbert Chapman established himself as a confident young full-back with an extended run in the first team from 1946. The emergence of another good young full-back in the form of Irving Barraclough gave Rovers a comparative embarrassment of riches which they quickly cashed in on, selling Chapman to Salford for £800.  In January 1949, he then moved to Hull KR for  £1,250.
