Local number nine Herbert Nash played some rugby at York in the pre-war years without establishing himself regularly in the first team. A contemporary press report said “his work in the loose is heroic but a lack of stature may be affecting his hooking abilities”. Like many players of this era, his life was interrupted by World War Two, where he was called up on active service and finished the war as a POW. He signed for Rovers in November 1945, when he had recovered and proved himself with trial games in the A team. Herbert was first team hooker with 23 appearances as Rovers finished in upper half of the league in the 1945/46 season but that was the end of his Rovers career.
