Twenty year old Horace Bond was playing with Wheldale Colliery when he was signed by Rovers towards the end of the 1944/45 season. For Featherstone’s final five matches of that season he was introduced to first team football. Playing at scrum-half, then full-back, then stand-off he showed nothing if not versatility. He might have thought that run would be a springboard to a fruitful post-war career but the following season had Harold Moxon and Jack Higgins in the halves and Bond managed only four further appearances.
