Reserve team scum-half Horace Howarth was thrown into the Rovers first team at short notice as Charlie Annable was injured. After an uncomfortable debut, he played much better the following week. When Annable recovered Howarth lost his place, but as the A team had been disbanded as a cost-cutting measure, he then had nowhere to play. He filled in a few more times that same season, and despite his promise, did not appear again for Rovers.  He transferred to Batley for the 1930/31 season.
