Local man Howard Darbyshire signed for his hometown team from Featherstone Miners’ Welfare in April 1965, and got a run out with the first team within weeks at full-back. First choice full-back that year Gary Cooper was injured, and A teamer Stan Dawson had stood in before Darbyshire got his chance.  The following year Cooper was sold to Wakefield, but it was Brian Wrigglesworth who claimed the number one shirt. Despite his dependability and being a useful goal-kicker, Darbyshire had to be content with reserve team football. When Cyril Kellett ‘came home’ to Featherstone in 1968 Darbyshire realised his first team chances would always be limited and in 1969 he moved to Dewsbury on a free transfer.
