The grandson of former Rovers prop Frank Hemingway, Ian Slater was a very promising teenage stand-off with great pace off the mark who chose to sign for Bradford as a youngster. Serious knee problems meant it never worked out of him there and after spells at Leeds and Huddersfield he finally came to Rovers towards the end of the 1983/4 season where he filled in at centre. Under coach Allan Agar, he played most of the following season, either at centre or vying for the stand-off role with Alan Banks. His career highlight was two tries against Castleford just before Christmas that helped Rovers to an enjoyable 13-12 victory.

When Rovers signed Andy Mackintosh and Banks moved to centre, there was no place for Slater who played his last game in October 1985.
